Applications of Cosmic Ray Muon Tomography in Carbon Capture Storage and Homeland Security

by Prof. Lee Thompson (University of Sheffield)

Wednesday 25 March 2015 from 14:30 to 15:30 (UTC)
at Chadwick Building ( Barkla Lecture Theatre )
Description
Cosmic ray muons provide a free source of particles capable of penetrating through rock and concrete. Muon tomography can be applied in different ways to detect contraband nuclear material and to map unknown overburdens. The talk will present the different methods and summarise the simulations and instrumentation developed in Sheffield to apply the muon tomography technique to the monitoring of off-shore captured carbon dioxide and the construction of cargo container scanners.
