Facilities - Research and Development AreaMost of the activities in the Research and Development areas relate to Liverpool's involvement in the LHCb experiment [external link], but some space is also given over to the thermal cycling chamber used to test ATLAS SCT modules. Modules are placed in a testing box, which is in turn placed within the chamber. The chamber is then programmed to cycle for 72 hours over a temperature range of -30C to +50C, in order to stress-test the module wirebonds. During this time, the temperature and humidity are recorded by a Tinytag environmental monitoring device placed in the testing box next to the modules. Pictures of the thermal cycling equipment:
