LCFI group meeting on Thursday 24th January =========================================== Start 16:00 UK time. You can participate in this meeting in one of three ways. You may come to RAL (Conf Room 1, Building R1), to Liverpool U Physics Dept, Oliver Lodge Laboratory, Room 306, or you may phone in from wherever you are. Phone-in participants should ring the BT conference centre at +44 1296 480100 (or 01296 480100 from the UK). This will connect you to an operator. Ask for the RUTHERFORD CONFERENCE CHAIRED BY MR DAMERELL, ACCESS CODE C900347. Meeting Agenda 1) UK PP funding crisis; consequences for LCFI Thanks to many LCFI participants, we assembled a good document for the SC and SCP4 (the Science Committee and the Science Committee Particle Physics Planning Panel respectively). I was interviewed by SCP4 on 14th January, as were the spokespersons of all UK particle physics projects. It seems that they became well aware of the very serious consequences of implementing their proposed cuts. Assuming (as they say) that additional funds will not become available, there will certainly be strong pressure for cuts in many non-PP areas of PPARC to be imposed in order to minimise the damage to our core scientific programme. In the case of LCFI, an increase of £120K per annum above their proposed starvation level would be sufficient to keep the project from stalling during the next 3 years. The next step for LCFI will be a discussion with the SC on 30th January, at which I have been invited to make a short presentation. If we survive that, we will be invited to submit a detailed proposal and make an open session presentation to the PPRP (Projects Peer Review Panel) for their 25th March meeting, with talks by Konstantin Stefanov and Nicolo de Groot. In the Group Meeting, we should discuss strategy and preparations for these future events. 2) Detector R&D status and plans 2.1 Thin ladder development 2.2 CCD58 testing, and outstanding equipment from ESD and ECD groups 2.3 CPCCD (work with MTech) 2.4 CPCCD (simulation) 2.5 CPCCD readout chip 2.6 CPCCD MCM (multi-chip module, incl bump bonding) 2.7 CPCCD electronics (motherboard and beyond) 2.8 Detector test system - Liverpool 3) Physics studies 4) LCFI organisation/manpower 5) Finances (current FY) 6) Funding for future FYs Currently, we have no budget allocation for FY02/03 which starts on 1st April. This depends on the outcome of Item 1. 7) Reports from recent LC-related meetings 8) Future LC-related meetings 9) Visit by Hamburg U, DESY and other physicists to RAL on 29/30th January 10) AOB If you have transparencies or drawings to show, please send them electronically to Tim Greenshaw, green@hep.ph.liv.ac.uk, so he can make them accessible from the LCFI home page.
