[Hvcmos] Radiation Protection in the Clean Room

Hi all,

As we have some new PhD students who want to work with sources in the
clean room and given that we have been a bit "relaxed" with the
radiation safety procedures I though I should give an update and reminder.

In case Dan or Louise want to add or correct anything below, I would ask
them to do so.

Since Paul Dervan's passing we don't have a dedicated radiation
protection officer for the clean room.
Alan Taylor has volunteered to take over but that requires a training
course which should be scheduled in October.
In the mean time, the contacts are Dan Hollywood (safety coordinator for
the ground floor) and Louise Nicholson (radiation protection for the
whole uni).
I can offer to assist in simple queries to reduce the workload on Dan
and Louise but not in an official role.

For new workers (including students) who want to work with sources
should register here: https://radpro.liverpool.ac.uk/
More resources on new work can be found here:
https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/professional-services/radiation-protection-office/new-work/
Usually, new workers are required to attend a safety seminar and
have their attendance recorded.
Since Covid and Pete's passing, we didn't really have any seminars and
as far as I'm aware none are scheduled yet.
In the mean time we have used the following arrangement:
New workers watch a recording of an older safety seminar
(https://liverpool.instructuremedia.com/embed/59f93342-48c3-4fc5-a9a3-a3c67c3bc604)
and then confirm to Louise in an email that they have watched it.
They then have to be instructed by someone how to access and handle the
sources in the clean room properly.

Also relevant for others is that sources that are being used have to be
checked out in the source database
(https://sealedsourcedatabase.liv.ac.uk/) and then checked back in once
they have been returned to the source cabinet.
This is a required procedure to track sources.
Access to the source database requires registration so unless you know
that you have been registered, please check if you can log in.
In case you can't, please email me (and only me/no reply to all please)
your MWS handle so I can collect all of them and ask Dan or Louise to
register them all at once.
The code for the key to the source cabinet should not be passed on to
anyone who is untrained and not registered in the source database.

Work that I'm personally involved with should be covered by risk
assessments that I have previously submitted.
Any other ongoing or new activities should be reviewed if they are
covered by a previous risk assessment or if they require a new one.
Templates and more resources can be found here:
https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/professional-services/radiation-protection-office/resources/

That is all I can think of at the moment :)
If anyone wants to add anything, please do so.

Cheers,
Jan
