LIGO and the hunt for (more) gravitational waves

by Prof. Ed Daw (University of Sheffield)

Wednesday 13 February 2019 from 15:30 to 17:00 (Europe/London)
LIGO aims to restart observations in science mode in March. The machines will be operating at higher sensitivity than during earlier runs, and we very much hope to observe more gravitational wave sources with the instruments. After introducing gravitational waves, the interferometer detectors, and the science harvest from earlier runs, I will indicate some of the challenges upgrading the instrument to even higher power, some directions that the analysis of data may possibly take in the future, and even some connections between these two seemingly disparate subjects.
